BP Expects Additional 1.3 Tcf of Gas from Tangguh LNG Expansion

The Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities or SKK Migas approved the plan for the next stage of the Tangguh LNG project, namely the development of the Ubadari Field and Vorwata Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) in West Papua.

BP Executive Vice President for Gas & Low Carbon Energy Dev Sanyal explained that his party estimates that there will be a potential for additional gas of 1.3 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) from the Ubadari and Vorwata Fields CCUS. The development of the Ubadari field is an accelerated step after going through a successful appraisal program and will be produced through an unmanned installation connected by an offshore pipeline to Tangguh's liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility.

Meanwhile, the Vorwata CCUS development will re-inject around 25 million tons of CO2 into the Vorwata reservoir to reduce most of the carbon emissions and provide additional gas production through enhanced gas recovery (EGR).

This CO2 injection will reduce up to 90 percent of the CO2 from the reservoir currently released into the air, or almost half of Tangguh LNG's emissions. “This development shows that Tangguh is a strategic project in BP's portfolio. Ubadari is a tangible manifestation of our focus on gas development, while the Vorwata CCUS-EGR project will be an important milestone for BP to be able to contribute to the goal of reducing emissions," he said as quoted in a press release, on Monday (30/8/2021).

Meanwhile, BP Regional President Asia Pacific Nader Zaki said that the front-end engineering and design (FEED) for the Ubadari and Vorwata CCUS Fields will begin in mid-2022. This stage will be carried out after obtaining approval from SKK Migas and Tangguh partners with an estimated completion of the work. in 2026 after the final investment decision. "The approval of the development plan for the Ubadari and Vorwata CCUS fields is a form of trust in the Tangguh LNG project and also a form of our ongoing commitment to invest in Indonesia," he explained.
